Description

One carved face survives.

A (top): Edged on the left with a double flat-band moulding. In the centre there is what may be the shaft of a cross, outlined by a flat-band moulding and enclosing, at the top, two punch-outlined pellets, and below, a register of simple pattern E, turning into a composite of a Stafford Knot (E) and a free ring. At the top right are traces of indecipherable interlace, perhaps forming a horizontal arm of the cross.

Discussion

In pattern repertoire and style of cutting this piece is very near 5-7. The deep relief and interlace decoration on the cross indicate that it was, when complete, an impressive monument.
